A lush rope-making history.
In the 1800s, the site at 140 Schermerhorn Street was home to an extensive rope-making facility run by Peter Schermerhorn. Spanning two full city blocks, it became the largest rope producer in the U.S., supplying rigging for New York’s growing shipbuilding industry, until a fire destroyed it in 1841.
